Topic: Zurk's firmware (chumby on a USB drive?)

This seems like a nice place for a simple summary of this thing that I think was created by someone named "zurk" that, if I read right, lets you run your own chumby server and widgets off an image that you can install onto a USB dongle inserted in your chumby.

I've seen info on it in other places but not found the write up on it, so I'll either link to it, wait for someone else to, or, as I jump through the hoops to get it and try to get it configured and running, I'll try to document it in this thread.

original post: http://forum.chumby.com/viewtopic.php?id=7832
requirements: there are two distributions for a "Chumby One" (Chumby classic, chumby one, of infocast 3.5) or "Chumby 8" class (Chumby8 / Infocast 8) Chumby
in a nutshell: Download a zip (212mb / 303 uncompressed for Chumby1 -- 262mb / 350mb uncompressed for Chumby8), unzip to a 512mb+ USB thumb drive, plug in, turn on
forum: (active, as of Feb 2013) https://sourceforge.net/projects/zurk/f … orum/12064
applying directly to the chumby rather than running off USB http://forum.chumby.com/viewtopic.php?pid=41707#p41707
further reading: There are pretty good resources included inside the zip after you download and extract. The setup process *is* pretty simple

Re: Zurk's firmware (chumby on a USB drive?)

There are *several* threads on the topic, and a...er...let's call him a "fan", called msharp42 that will surely pop up soon to tell you *all* about it and how everything you see going on here is a Big Waste Of Time.

It's probably best to add your notes to one of those threads rather than start a whole new one with redundant information - plus zurk has his own forum with more detail.

Re: Zurk's firmware (chumby on a USB drive?)

Here's the main thread - 5 pages of zurky goodness.

Re: Zurk's firmware (chumby on a USB drive?)

Yeah - thanks, but as far as I can tell, it's (as you said) 5 pages of zurky goodness.  I'd much rather see a neatly laid out summary of features, requirements, etc.  That's what I'm hoping for and will try to update the original thread with.  And I went looking for info on it in this topic  (with the newly? laid out forums and didn't find it) I didn't find those threads, so...here I am.  Maybe I'll put this in the wiki later.

I noticed msharp42's earlier suggestion that the chumby is dead and we should all throw the baby in the river - that won't stop me from trying to compile and organize clear and moderately comprehensive info about this option smile

Hey - and Duane, I have own three chumby's and got my sister to buy a bunch (she has 4). Thanks a ton for all you've done with this over the years and right now - it's super cool and fwiw and though I haven't said anything about it, I've been aware you've been behind a lot of this since the company folded and silently thankful.  Whenever the "donate" gets hooked up on chumby.com, I'm in for a couple hundred bucks.

Re: Zurk's firmware (chumby on a USB drive?)

Sorry, I missed this thread and started a related topic, since zurkware is being mentioned in so many different threads. My humble opinion of it all is-

When you download Zurk's software, you get a great write up on how to use and install the software as part of the package.

I've found this out now - thanks!  Updating original thread with this.
