As a developer of widgets, I have to express concern.
1) I've not been contacted or emailed over any change in chumby, chumby.com, the widget repository.
2) I'm not a huge fan of Sony in anything that it does, and now it's going to be making profit off my work?
I didn't mind submitting my content to chumby, I'm not so sure I like the idea of Sony using it.
Further to that, how do I even log into the sony dash site as a widget author?!
We discussed this matter before. One thing to consider is Chumby Inc. was not doing well. It was evident their business was not going anywhere.
Sony was one of their customers, and when this became apparent here's what Sony did:
Took the servers needed to support thier product and their customers in house.
Bought and paid for whatever equipment and services this took.
Hired whatever talent and knowhow it took to do this and paid for it.
They now continue to run those chumby servers to support their Sony Dash customers, customers who pay no ongoing subscription fees for the service required by their Sony Dash units.
I for one find their corporate behavior responsible, even admirable.
They took on the expense of supporting their customers on an ongoing basis, and I have no idea if they even have any chumby based products on the market anymore.
Why don't you like Sony?
It seems to me in this matter Sony has been very responsible for their customers and the ongoing support they need for the products they bought from Sony, even years later.
Compare that to Best buy/Insignia, which washed their hands of Chumby some years ago and failed to provide any support whatsoever to their past customers. Insignia has not paid for any servers, and bandwidth, any support, they are even clueless to provide the first level support that they contracted to provide. They don't even admit they know how to unregister a unit so it can be reregistered. Duane does that. Thanks to Duane. No thanks to Insignia.
I think your tirade against Sony might be misplaced. If we had Sony units right now we would still have widgets and we wouldn't have to be worrying about how to support (and pay for) the Chumby servers, if they ever have any support. Not that people aren't trying valiantly, clearly they are.
But Sony's behavior, it wasn't bad. I find it admirable. Rare for a corporation to be as responsible as they have.
