Topic: MPEG licensing?

Something I've been tossing around in my head: if we make our own media players and such for the Chumby, will we have to go out and get MPEG licensing on our own, or does the licensing attach to the hardware? Or is it like the Adobe software (possibly even licensed directly through the Adobe software)?

I've been playing around with "demos" like the one Caustik just posted, of course they use MP3s for all of their sound and libmad for playback (performs better than ogg :-/). I'm wondering what the policy/legality of all of this is.

Re: MPEG licensing?

The software included with the chumby device is properly licensed.

If you intend to distribute your own player that requires a license for the countries into which you intend to distribute, you should consult with the appropriate licensing authority.  In the case of MP3, the information can be found here.
