Topic: chumby as a remote?

can you program a chumby to function as a remote control?
not just for a tv, but set it to control lights, sprinklers and other devices?

Re: chumby as a remote?

Sure! You would need some extra server equipment and such, but its defiantly possible.

Re: chumby as a remote?

Sure you could...  I would recommend checking out the Misterhouse project.  I have a TabletPC in my living room as one of my interfaces to it.  It gives me all my motion sensing, cameras, lights, etc. through a web interface.  Has a bit of a learning curve, but works great once going.  Not being onboard in the alpha group, this is the very application I am excited about the Chumby coming out.  I plan to have at least one by my bedside to control the house systems.

Yeah, I agree with imstriker.
Maybe a possibility is to connect a remote control to one of those "Electronic Sprinkler Timers".
or even completely tear out the guts and put the remote control unit inside the plastic case that it's housed in. Most of the sprinkler timers have a "Manual" on/off switch on them, so if you prefer to use software as opposed to hardware, you could run two wires to the switch.
Hope this helps!  :-)
