Topic: Useful linux flash utility

Just wanted to point people at this little hack I wrote last weekend... http://www.beatniksoftware.com/blog/?p=48

I've been working on a Flash-based device prototype as a freetime project, after being inspired by the Chumby I received at FooCamp.  (Thanks guys!)

For my prototype I'm just sticking with an x86 VIA board, and to avoid having talk with and pay Adobe just yet, I'm using the Linux flash browser plugin to run Flash.  But to do this without requiring all the overhead of a browser, and to make interfacing with Flash simple via magic URLs, I needed a small standalone solution, so I wrote one.

Don't know if it's useful to anybody else, but oh well ;-)

Re: Useful linux flash utility

Should be very useful to me actually, I've got one of those x86 AMD Geode embedded boards laying around I could probably hack this onto. I imagine it wouldn't be a perfect 1:1 solution to Chumby, but it should be fairly compatible.

Oh, and I decided to read through your blog a bit (I actually use your gimmie software, grabbed from Digg a while back); if you're looking for touchscreen LCDs, they're ridiculously hard to find within those parameters. Your best bet would be to find a laptop LCD and get a 4-wire touchscreen to lay over it. Or you can check out the same company the Chumbians went with for bit larger of a display with an integrated touchscreen (like this one: http://dataimagelcd.com/product/fg/doc/fg080010dt.htm ).

Re: Useful linux flash utility

Whoa cool!  Glad some of my work is useful or at least interesting to you :-)  It is really a pain finding a decently large, durable LCD screen.  I'm still searching, but in the mean time I'm just going to mess around with a 6.5" kit from Optrex.
