Topic: Xterasys WIFI antennae location

Can someone point me to a clear picture of where the antennae would be on this wifi adaptor on the riser board?
I can see pictures of the adaptor and riser board on http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2053/218 … 513fa2.jpg
but not a close up of the adapter itself.
I am thinking of soldering an extended antennae to the adapter and making it look like a tail on the back of the chumby, much like those old Sony clock radios.

There's a tear down here http://broo2.blogspot.com/2008/01/naked-chumby.html
Apparently the antenna on the wifi dongle is on the far end.

Keep us updated with any progress - I'm looking for a way to improve the wifi reception on mine...

You can see the blue surface mount antenna in this image

That's it..? How can that pick up anything..! wink
Isn't technology wonderful (when it works).

Re: Xterasys WIFI antennae location

Wow. I suppose if you feel like doing a case mod, you could always run the wifi card via a USB extension into a "beaver-like tail" sticking off the back of the chumby. Don't think it would improve reception all that much though.

Re: Xterasys WIFI antennae location

Well, I opened up the chumby, looked at the usb wifi dongle closely and decided i better not mess with the surface mount antenna because of the simple fact that it is really crowded with other components where one slip with my soldering iron and my chumby becomes a sack with a blank screen. I did have an idea of taking out the usb dongle but it seems to be glued to its socket. I fiddled with it trying to pry it loose but decided against it when I saw the wifi dongle bending. so as far as improving wifi, the only thing i can think of now is to buy the same model usb wifi dongle and use a usb extension.

Re: Xterasys WIFI antennae location

Buying the same model usb wifi dongle and use a usb extension and removing the internal wifi adapter is exactly what I did - it works great.
