Topic: FTP <-> Chumby <-> FTP

How possible would be to make the chumby accept an FTP or rather even host one. Then the USB could actually be slower and more work if you wish to have an external HHD or just a memorystick on the go. (IK..IK..1 hour batterly life), but then again it wouldn't be hard to create a portable base for the chumby which included a HHD, battery pack, Loud speakers, and maybe IR and Bluetooth. IK this project seems a bit much for a pre-release Chumby but how many think it would be possible to have a "portable" FTP Chumby. wink

EDITED: "typo" yikes

(sorry) Man I love all this hype over a clock. OMG i really cant wait till day 1 release. Thinking of getting 2? (sorry)

Re: FTP <-> Chumby <-> FTP

portable: prolly not, but FTP, is a possibility. Filezilla is opensource, so it could be ported.

need upload space for the forums or a chumby blog? right here then

Re: FTP <-> Chumby <-> FTP

I believe with the current model if you get sshd running, you'll be able to use scp to transfer files to/from it, which is like a secure version of ftp.  However, the chumby itself does not host an ssh or scp client - I keep one on a dongle.

I'm sure somebody will port an ftp server - it's pretty easy.  I'm not sure we'd want to ship chumbys with an active ftp server running all the time - it's yet another security issue.

Re: FTP <-> Chumby <-> FTP

create a control panel for launching such things. thats what i meant about a package system: something that installed, configured, and executed everything with minimum of fuss.

Re: FTP <-> Chumby <-> FTP

Internet perhaps? take a look at how the OpenWRT team have used ipkg to download and install packages on demand from ANY http server!

hoping for a chumby release before xmas.
every chumby is squishy, except the ones that arent.

Re: FTP <-> Chumby <-> FTP

I was thinking more along the lines of a slim external hhd which only ran off of usb (Only thinking like that cuz i have one wink). but yea its possible for a thumb drive to do the same, if you can make them both speek to each other and actually connect.
