How about a motion sensor in the chumby?

Something like a Passive IR detector (like from a home alarm system) that could detect movement in the vicinity of the chumby. The system and/or individual widgets could then use motion events to trigger functionality (ie. the chumby could go to 'sleep' if there's been no motion in the room for 30 mins - then wake up if someone comes back in the room). Combining this with the idea of a 'scheduler' or configurable channels (for time of day and other events) would be really powerful.

Too late to include in production chumbies? Perhaps a PIR detector could be attached to a USB port ....
