Topic: Adobe announces the end of Flash

Not sure what (if anything) this means for the future of the Chumbysphere...

Re: Adobe announces the end of Flash

Well, it's not like the widgets will suddenly stop working, or that the existing tools to create them will suddenly explode.

It would mean that any future chumby device will have to provide a migration path to another technology.

Re: Adobe announces the end of Flash

There are a LOT of embedded devices out there still using Flash due to some instability of HTML5 for real time data, so I doubt we'll be seeing it disappear anytime soon.

Re: Adobe announces the end of Flash

Besides, Flash is so exhausting on display card. I think, it is logical decision

Re: Adobe announces the end of Flash

Ummm - struggling to get flash installed & running on a desktop... and Adobe has said they will block player plugin from working from the EOS date, so how do we configure widgets going forwards?

Re: Adobe announces the end of Flash

There really won't be a way.  Many of the chumby-built widgets allow configuration on the device itself.  You won't the able to preview widgets in the browser.  Like it or nor, the chumby devices are based on Flash, and we don't have a time machine to change that decision.

I'm not planning on shutting down the service, so it will continue to deliver widgets to devices.  The devices certainly don't "phone home" to Adobe so they can't be disabled.

I mentioned in another thread that I've been looking into allowing developers to create configuration of widgets via HTML, but there are a *lot* of issues with that.

Re: Adobe announces the end of Flash

Yep - widget configuration was the pain.  I simply can't get flash to work under Linux, but it's still enabled for IE11 on a desktop I have access to... I have no idea how adobe is planning on blocking the player when EOS is reached, but that have stated "and Flash-based content will be blocked from running in Adobe Flash Player after the EOL Date."

Re: Adobe announces the end of Flash

Adobe will be pushing for users to remove Flash from their systems.
