Topic: FM+RadioVIS (RadioDNS) on Chumby One

Hi,

Here's an example of the hybrid broadcast/broadband Visual Radio application on the Chumby One:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kHb-VNdbDM

Very briefly, when you tune to an FM station, a radioDNS query (on Internet) is made to know about visual content behind this program. If it exists, then the Chumby will automatically display visual elements in a constantly updated slideshow.

We plan to make all the developments available in open source of course but there are a couple of hacks on the chumby:
- chumbradiod has been modified so that it outputs also the RDS PI code in the XML. Some small modification have also been done to improve FM reception (mono when on loudpseaker) and to make it compatible in Europe (100kHz spacing, 75uS de-emphasis)
- in this demo, the control panel has been short-circuited.
- the DNS was not really feasible in Flashlite so a HTTP proxy is used to do the first radioDNS query. The query could also be integrated in chumbradiod.

So if there's an interest on Chumby Industries to integrate such an application then we are ready to collaborate to make it possible.

RadioDNS open standard is gaining traction amongst broadcasters and visual radio may become a reality in the coming years. Otehr applications are under development like Electronic Program Guide, tagging, service following,... More info on http://www.radiodns.org

Mathias,

Very cool!  We're actively working on improving RDS data in chumbradiod, so happy to integrate your changes to support RadioVIS.  If the radioDNS queries are moved into chumbradiod as opposed to using a separate HTTP proxy, there's no reason that Flash couldn't parse and render the appropriate visual elements.

Definitely interested in collaborating on this - we'll reach out via email.
