Can anyone point me in the right direction to distill this:

Into a Chumby widget? I'm a Yahoo pipes novice, but can can run with the ball with a little help.

you are on the right track by starting with pipes.

Once you get a decent feed out of the page you will want to use Pipes JSON and a JSON parser to get it into Flash and build your display
