Topic: UK TV clock widgets

I've recently added a bunch of great flash clocks created by a guy called Dave Jeffery.

They are the clocks that UK TV stations once used as a background to the announcer introducing the next programme. That no longer happens, I guess because they sold the air time to the advertising department?! But the clocks are so fantastically designed I am sure some people will enjoy them.

Most of "UK TV clock" range are taken from a great website called 625.uk.com and you can read more about the history of these beautiful clocks at that link.

Here is one I am working on myself, which will have coloured backgrounds and an experiment with Night Mode:

Blame the admin! wink

Glad you like them

Re: UK TV clock widgets

Awesome - some of these bring back memories...

Would it be possible to do a widget that randomly chooses one of these clocks when activated? It'd be cool to have a different TV clock pop up each time it got to that point in the channel...

I kinda agree -- would it be possible to combine the clocks, or make the clock 'skinnable' so you could add more without making a software change?

I definitely agree -- these are the coolest!  I like the second hand motion on them!

Made a channel just for these!

Re: UK TV clock widgets

Haha! Me, too. I have a Clock channel just for clocks I like.

BTW, what's your favourite?

With regards to the single channel idea, I asked Mike@Chumby and he recommended one widget per clock. I suspect because that way you get to see what you're buying onto rather than the it being a bit of a black box. Besides, bundling them all into one widget would take me even more time!

It may be possible for me to build a "picker" for these, but I think creating a channel will do for now?

Any other ideas are appreciated.

I can see the logic in that to start with, I guess, but once you've set out your stall of 'lots of really cool retro UK telly clocks', then I think you'd know what you're buying into with a random-clock widget.

I don't have a channel just of clocks, you see - I have a couple of channels of thematically-chosen widgets, which are interspersed with clocks. To have one clock which i knew more-or-less what it would look like (ie a TV ident clock) but not exactly which one I think would make a cool addition to a channel...

Re: UK TV clock widgets

I'll have a think about how it could work, then.

It'll definitely require a good amount more work than it took to do them separately, that's for sure!

Think of it as a challenge!

Re: UK TV clock widgets

If I had to pick a favorite from the ones you did, I would have to say the TSW clock. However, overall, I would have to say the BBC 2 clock (which someone beat you to the punch on).

Re: UK TV clock widgets

Yeah I use the TSW clock mainly.

Without that BBC2 widget I'd have not found these others, so no worries about that smile

There's a couple of Chumby design aesthetics I don't agree with... but that's not important.  Keep doing what your doing, they're great!

PS. Okay, I'll say it.  I'm not paying for your widgets, so I thinik the "buying onto" argument doesn't hold.   I can already have multiple instances of a single widget, so it makes no difference whether they are all bundled as one, or as separate widgets.  The obstacle is the 100K limit to a widget size;  if you can't fit it into a 100K size, then definitely keep them separate.

Having said that, I do see there is a limitation in how we can describe widgets when we upload them.   If you COULD do all those as one widget, then I wish there was a way you can put all those thumbnails you gave us earlier as part of the description you upload for others to see -- then people CAN see what they are buying into.

The other benefit of a single widget is that I don't have to track down every single one you've created to see if I missed any.  I really like 'em.  The hand motion is great.

Re: UK TV clock widgets

I've uploaded a widget that was lager than 100KB, so I'm not sure that's a hard and fast rule any more.

Thanks for your other feedback. I really like the mechanical hand motion, too.
