Topic: Robotics?

I was looking at the chumby, and got to thinking, "Could I make a robot/remote controlled vehicle out of this?"
I has the IO ports, which should be able to be used to control a few motors, and it could be remote controlled over Wifi or you could add sensors to make it fully autonomous. Comments? Suggestions? Criticisms?

Re: Robotics?

I think Bunnie already did something like this and used one chumby to control another chumby in a stuffed animal to make its head tilt. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It can be a motorised vehicle only if you get a battery hack to work. It is connected to the wall.

Robot, yes, excellent idea. I'm looking forward to seeing how people do this.

"Electronic Circuits for the Evil Genius : 57 projects" by Dave Cutcher has a few simple motorised plushie projects if that helps....

I'm planning to put chumby in a new housing...rig a circuit separate to the chumby circuitry and hopefully not toast chumby...(I don't trust myself to touch chumby's innards just yet, maybe next year!).

Re: Robotics?

This is awful. But could be very funny...but really bad...(Don't flame me! I don't really do these things!)
You could set one chumby up as a wi-fi remote control robot. Have another chumby at work streaming pictures from a webcam. And when your cat is sound asleep....

Actually, she cries like crazy when I leave the house....maybe set chumby up with a sound switch that activates some soothing response....there you go...baby/furbaby monitor...baby/furbaby cries, chumby plays a lullaby mp3 or a voice recording (would this work in reality or just my imagination? )

Re: Robotics?

I can totally see some treads on the chumby

Re: Robotics?

Hmm do you think I could make some sort of robot out of legos using some lego motors? I have a lego program that lets you controll the lego motors from the computer using IR but im not sure it will work. I can get a lego camera that sends the information to the computer then i can use the chumby as the remote from my friends house and do the same thing Angela was talking about or maby I can leave the TV on and put the camera in front of it and intant TV acess from any WiFi hotspot (I could program my lego robot to change the channels) big_smile

Re: Robotics?

I just learned of the Chumby tonight.  I am only interested in it for hacking into robotics projects-  I am currently reading up on the processing power and hardware setup-  The Chumby is just begging to be the head of a robot-

Now I wonder if it could run a slimmed down OpenCV - that + webcam could produce some fun projects.  It appears (for now) that a tethered bot is the first step, so you don't have to deal with power issues.

I'm off to read more documentation-

Re: Robotics?

I compile player/stage http://playerstage.sourceforge.net/ for my Linux robotic platform: http://wiki.emqbit.com/ecbot.
As you can see in the video i can control the robot via wifi from my laptop, using a  player application,

Re: Robotics?

I'm working on a cheap chumby telepresence using a roomba and an arduino.  All that is really needed is the usb->serial bit and a battery.  I'd like to be able to stream AV to and from the chumby.
