Topic: Placing an USB-stick inside the chumby

Hello!

I want to store one or the other thing (mp3s, pictures...) on the chumby, and so I need a storage-device, but I don't want to have an USB-stick plugged in outside of my chumby, so I would like to place it inside.

I thought of unplugging the wifi and replace it with a tiny USB-hub, and plug the wifi and an usb-stick in that hub. Is this possible? I opened my chumby today and saw that there isn't very much space, especially around the socket of the wifi, but I think it is doable.

Is anybody here who has already done this? What problems do I have to expect?

I have one of the new USB drive that is about the size of a finger nail that I simply plug into one of the back slots. It is such a low profile stick that it only sticks out about a quarter of an inch from the back.

Not exactly what you're looking for, but it is a nice alternative to hacking the hardware.

Would be a great alternative, but I couldn't find such a small usb-stick. Can you tell me the manufacturer/model? Perhaps I can order it somewhere.

The one I'm using actually came from a promotional "Credit Card" usb drive that was given to me from a vendor, so I don't actually have a manufacturer. I know I've seen them at bestbuy, though they don't seem to have any listed on their site. Might try wandering into your local electronics store and asking for the smallest USB drive they have.

Here are some that are in a case, but it looks like you can easily take the case off.

Also I know Sony makes some without the case they are just hard to find. I think I recently seen them at my local Fry's.

Yes! Those were the one's that I've seen. Always appeared too small to use on a regular basis, like they would get lost easily. But as a permanent fixture in a Chumby they'd be great.

ok, got one today. It works good and is less distracting than a normal USB-stick. I still would like it to have it inside, but for now it's good enough.

They have those collapsing SD cards that have USB connectors built right into the SD card.  They're pretty small.

I've done it.  The only real trick is finding short USB cables so you can cram everything inside.

I've got 16 Gig inside my Chumby for the past few months.  No problems at all.

In the meantime I did it too, but I had big troubles getting the hub inside the chumby, although it's a really small hub. I had to remove the case of the hub and place it between mainboard and the wifi riser card.

Now I have 1GB internal memory - which should be enough for me at the moment smile

Got a fantastic deal today on the 4gb Sony Micro Vault at Circuit City in San Francisco. They had them priced in their system at $14.99, even though the ads and in store displays were more than twice as expensive. I picked up two and got the same low price from two different stores.
