Topic: Chumby Alternative

Chumby was the perfect alarm clock for me.  It did everything I wanted as an alarm clock - custom alarm schedule with Pandoa, show Google calendar, weather, and time, and turn the screen off and on based on time.

I don't have the technical know-how to try to keep this thing running with the various other solutions being proposed / implemented.

Can anyone suggest anything as a replacement?  iPhone with JB, Android app, etc?

Re: Chumby Alternative

Don't write Chumby off just yet. We are working on keeping your Chumby going. It may lose some functionality but will most likely still do most of what you want.

If you still want to look at alternatives, you could check out the Grace Digital Mondo radio: http://www.gracedigitalaudio.com/mondo-p-212.html
It will wake you to Pandora and you can check weather (very basic) on it.

Tar, feathers, congress. Some assembly required.

Re: Chumby Alternative

I sincerely hope that my Chumbies hang in there; they've been great (my wife starts each day by consulting the three weather apps we found useful).

Even closer to an internet radio is the Arnova 35 Home Connect (http://www.archos.com/products/home/arc … mp;lang=en) but that product is crude, underpowered, and has a touchscreen so bad that even a 3.5 inch Chumby shines in comparison.

Coming very soon, I gather, and already available for preorder on Amazon Germany is the Arnova SoundPad 17.8 (http://www.amazon.de/Arnova-SoundPad-In … amp;sr=1-1), with reasonable screen resolution and what appears to be a full range of Android apps at the ready...

For now, though, I'm rooting for Chumby.

Re: Chumby Alternative

Before I found the Chumby, I had been playing around with cheap Android Tablets. They have plenty of Apps to wake to music and do other things that the Chumby can do. I have seen some as cheap as $60.00. Buy a nice cover/stand and you are in business. You can add speakers, wired or bluetooth. Some even have HDMI out so you could add it to the bedroom TV!

A little imagination can go a long way.

Re: Chumby Alternative

Some of us have been looking for a Chumby sub for a while, but nothing really fits. Tablets can look and sound great, but don't really shine running 24/7. About 6 months ago I got a bargain-basement BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. It has fantastic audio and display, limited apps but enough alarm clocks, etc. Build quality is also great. I love the thing, but it doesn't substitute for the Chumby at all. I think that's why we're all here trying to keep our Chumbys going.

I also looked at some older Nokia devices that were like proto-tablets before smartphones took over from PDAs. They looked like fun but again not close to Chumby functionality.
