Topic: turn off wifi

Hi all,
now my model one is wired with an USB-ethernet adaptor but,  for health reasons, I need to physically turn off the wifi adapter. Can anyone help me?

Re: turn off wifi

If you have a Chumby One, it's relatively easy to open up the device and just unplug the Wifi dongle.  It's just connected by a USB connector inside.

Re: turn off wifi

There's a video showing how to open it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rg0j9U1_Sfk    You only need to remove the back, the Wifi card is mounted near the top of the back board.

Thanks a lot!!!

I've already opened it and I've removed the wifi dongle.

Due to a particular desease I can't stay near a 2.4 ghz transmitter, so wifi and BT cause to me headache and sore throat.

Can I now use the new available USB port for other purposes like the rear USB?

You should try having a friend randomly connect/disconnect the WiFi and see if your symptoms return. If you can correctly  react to the effect more than 10 times out of 20, then you will be the first person who has RF/EMF sensitivity to accomplish this.

I am not belittling your disease in any way.

If you want long term relief, seriously consider Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It is the ONLY documented effective treatment for people with this disorder.

I'm an IT professional and I use BT and WIFI since their first appearance on the market. I can assure you that I have done dozens of tests.

My problems are primarily with BT, which cause immediate pain in my throat, while I may feel a WiFi transmitter ina a range of maximum two meters, few minutes later it is turned on, with a sense of fullness and "close" to the throat.

Once I made some tests with a 200mw WIFI PCI card using a large panel of metal as shielding, which put on and off and the results were impressive.

A friend of mine who sells mobile phones told me that other clients showed the same problems with BT and can not use it like me.

(excuse me for my bad english, I'm Italian, and for this off topic)

Re: turn off wifi

Is there no way to turn it off by SW?

I'd like to disable the radio over night.

Re: turn off wifi

It's possible to run a script when an alarm goes off and use that to disable the radio at one time, reenable it at another.  See http://wiki.chumby.com/mediawiki/index. … rm_actions for details on setting up those scripts.  To enable/disable the radio, you'd need to use an iwconfig command, IIRC, but I don't know exactly what.

Re: turn off wifi

OK, so I've disconnected the wifi dongle in the Chumby One.
Now I'd like to disable the wireless in the Classic as well, in the sense of physically disconnecting or powering down.
I see on the wiki (http://wiki.chumby.com/mediawiki/index. … rm_actions) that there is a command that disables the interface network connection, but the author notes that they are unsure whether or not this powers down the wireless card.
Does anyone have any advice for me?
I am confident with electronics hardware work, disassembly, fine soldering and the like, but really don't know anything much about programming. For example, if it could be established that the above command actually does power down the wireless card, I still don't know how to use the command, ie how do you get it into the Chumby?

Re: turn off wifi

As per my knowledge in order to disconnect your wifi connection, just you need to remove the chumby dungle plug.It is very easy to carry out.

Re: turn off wifi

I ran "ifconfig wlan0 down" and "iwconfig wlan0 txpower off" and I've actually noticed the back getting cooler over the last few minutes. I was looking out for a solution to this since I'm at school using my Chumby on the little battery in my Linux class. With no wifi signal here (had to use the offline "hack" to get a control panel), there's no use keeping that on draining the battery. Too bad I only learned about it after using the Chumby on battery for the past hour or so with wifi on wink
