Topic: Beginner widget example request

Can anyone provide a detailed step by step example of how to get a simple widget that can be modified onto the Chumby One without using a USB Flash drive?  Also, is it necessary to purchase software such as Adobe Flash IDE to create/modify widgets?  I have read through the Chumby tricks wiki but it does not explain step by step for the programming illiterate (for example, how to get the files onto the Chumby and where to put them).  I think a basic example would be a great help to all of us who are interested in hacking the Chumby One but don't know where to start.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is it you're looking to do?

Cheers.

Re: Beginner widget example request

I am looking to do anything.  It seems that clocks are a popular widget so a simple clock would be a great example.  I am not so interested in the code itself (however sample code would be necessary) but the process of getting it onto the Chumby and being able to modify it.

Re: Beginner widget example request

Well if you want to modify it, you're going to need to be interested in the code. smile

You will need a .swf file to upload to the chumby which you can output from either using the Adobe IDE (an older version like CS3 will work just fine), or something like FlashDevelop.

After you have the .swf, head over to the upload page.  Once you have uploaded your .swf, add the newly uploaded widget to one of your channels.

View and enjoy.

Cheers.

Re: Beginner widget example request

I tried uploading the .fla clock widget that pounce suggested, but the upload page gave me an error stating that I needed to upload a .swf file.  What is the difference between the .fla and .swf file?

Re: Beginner widget example request

Another helpful example would be how to implement the clock overlay trick on the Chumby Wiki:
http://wiki.chumby.com/mediawiki/index. … ck_overlay
I have no idea how to create this file: "/psp/clockoverlay.xml" or if there is some software I need to do it.  I also don't know how this would get onto my Chumby.  Thanks for everyone's help.
