Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

This would make an interesting new widget... be able to choose from a list of NOAA weather radio stations countrywide. Looks like many are now streaming in MP3. List is at:  http://www.wunderground.com/wxradio/index.html

Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

Yes, it's on shoutcast, but it's MY station, low in the rankings, so it's hard to scroll to, AND I'm a chumby owner AND it's the most eclectic music station on the internet.  Anybody have any Chumby jingles? :-)

Xmas music on Xmas.

Commercial free, by the way.

Way down on the Shoutcast list:

Please?

Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

my votes are for:

* KEXP, out of Seattle

* WFMU (New Jersey, I think)

* RadioDavidByrne

Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

wfmu is there, and it is great. Never listened to it before.

Wbur, an npr station, in shoutcast, does not seem to work

Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

With the latest beta I can search for wnyc, but the only thing that comes up is wnyc classical music. Is there a wnyc npr talk radio on shoutcast?

wfmu is already there on radio chumby

Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

kqed from shoutcast seems to have a clicking noise. Does Chumy have a problem playing certain streams?

Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

SHOUTcast stations which are mono or a funny sample rate are pushed through a rate converter - in the current firmware that's very CPU intensive and may produce a slight click artifact in the audio stream.  You should not hear the click in a stream that's already stereo and 44.1KHz.

We are addressing this issue in a future firmware update.

It appears that WNYC operates 3 streams - FM 93.9, AM 820, and WNYC2 Classical.  At any given moment it's hard to know what will show up in a search on SHOUTcast - right now, *none* of the stations show up in a search.

That's the nature of SHOUTcast.

Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

I do not understand that.

Why would only one of the three come up in a search?

Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

Because stations come and go on SHOUTcast - as I said, the last time I checked, *none* of the WNYC stations showed up.

I don't know the exact relationship between SHOUTcast and the stations themselves, but I suspect that the stations are required to update their status regularly, otherwise they're dropped from the list, and that SHOUTcast runs a some sort of daemon that checks for stream availability.

In any case, there's nothing we can do about it here at Chumby - we just pass on the data as given by the upstream provider.

It's a bit like holding Dell responsible because a particular web page indexed by Google isn't available.

Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

Would like to see KCBS AM- San Franscio,CA be added to the radio stations listed.

Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

+1

I tried setting this up as a new stream and no dice. Is this again an incompatible audio resolution for what the Chumby supports?

Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

Hi everyone,

I work with radiotime.com and think I can be of assistance in this thread.  We maintain a directory of over 50k radio stations and 150k radio programs worldwide, organized by location, genre, and interest.  We carry thousands of stream links for those that offer their programming online, and we maintain codec and vitality information to help weed throught the population that won't work on devices like the Chumby.

All of our information is available through various APIs (web service, OPML).  Our services include automatic geodetection so we can create a familiar "local dial" experience based only on an IP address.  Moreover, you can pull together a set of favorite programs and stations into a preset list that you can make available on any device using our services.

Best of all, it's free and we actively encourage contribution from our users - you can submit new stations, new streams, etc.  Please let me know how we can help to make Radio Free Chumby a great experience.

Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

Regarding radiotime.com...

This looks a very good source of search-able streams. It took some digging but I found the developer docs here: http://wiki.radiotime.com/doku.php?id=dev:doc:home. That "Explore" function would be an awesome widget, maybe the killer widget (at least for me).

...and listening to streams in general...

Internet radio - streams - is the new radio and source DXing for me. HD Radio? What a sad joke!

One of my favorite pastimes over the years has been late-night DXing on the AM and shortwave bands, and that's one of my reasons for getting a Chumby. I've done this for years and years... as kid, at bedtime when I finally had to stop reading and turn off the light, I would often turn on a little transistor AM radio and scan up and down the band through my pillow. Living in northern NJ at the time, it was routine for me to listen to Wash DC, Chicago, Boston and more distant exotic locales like Havana, Quebec, or Iowa.

Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

I have heard a few times that people want to see MY local NPR station. KQED from San Francisco:

MP3 32kpbs:
http://www.kqed.org/listen/live/mp3/kqedradio.pls

Also it would be cool to see WBAI. I like it for one show which is Off the Hook produced by the infamous 2600 magazine.

64kpbs MP3:
http://stream.wbai.org:8000/64k.m3u

64kpbs Ogg:

It would be great to see this.

Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

thanks for this tip, I did not realize that off the hook was still playing.

The times i was looking for it I found the show after it, the personal computer show, and assumed the 2600 show had just become a personal computer self help show.

Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

Ya. They also do a podcast now... lemme find the link...

I installed the beta this morning and the station I suggested, "Proton Radio" is showing up as "Pronton Radio".  Can you please correct the spelling? smile

Also, adding suggestion for KERA Public Radio:

Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

I like to wake up to nature sounds.  There isn't a lot of that streaming.  The great granddaddy of nature recordings, however, is:

http://www.wildsanctuary.com/

I have no idea how to get stuff into and out of Live365.  I'm not a fan.  Frankly, I'm woefully unimpressed.  Unfortunately, Wild Sanctuary uses it.  Interestingly enough, they have this to say about their stream:

"To qualify for a free Wild Sanctuary player, inquire via email here.
For non-commerical use only. All rights reserved."

Which doesn't seem to jive with the whole "pay per month" Live365 model.

Their stream, once thrown into iTunes, is a disaster:

http://www.live365.com/play/335863?auth … p;from=pls

I got started throwing it into "my streams" to see what happens, but that whole "token" thing pretty much made me decide to not bother (that and typing the above on the Chumby screen is an exercise in "not fun").

Any hope?  Wild Sanctuary might make a great "public service" partner for Chumby.  Or maybe a widget from them.  Or something.  Again, I need to wrap my head around Flash so I stop asking stupid questions.  In the meantime, thanks for humoring me.

Re: Suggest stations for Radio Free Chumby

How about two international stations?

(1) The best Irish Station is called RTE:

http://www.rte.ie/radio/liveplayer_av.h … o_new.smil

(2) And probably the best news station in the world is BBC World Service. However, I cant seem to locate the URL other than through Windows or Real Player. Maybe somebody else can?

thanks
