That used to be posted but it's apparently gone down the Memory Hole like everything else dash.  As I recall their media player was pretty robust, so it should be able to handle the most common stuff - MPEG-4, WMV, etc.  I suspect that once it's released, some users can just try stuff and document it.

Re: What video files can the Dash play?

I used my usb with mp4 videos ( 480p  ) but my chumby didn't play it

Re: What video files can the Dash play?

We were just talking about the Dash. It plays more types of videos. The Chumbys can play movies But not Mp4s I don't think.

Re: What video files can the Dash play?

The chips in the smaller devices were designed for MP3/audio players, and don't have a video coprocessor.  The larger chumbys have faster processors and may be able to play some videos.  In general, you'd want to create the videos at the screen dimensions with relatively low quality and frame rate, and encoded them as Flash movies using the non-MP4 codecs.  Back in 2006/2007 many Youtube videos were encoded that way and the chumbys could play many of them.  Since then, however, Youtube has moved away from Flash codecs, is now providing HD quality videos, and closed their APIs so you can't easily get to them anyway.

The processor in the dash was originally designed for Smart TVs, so it has a dedicated video processor in it, though the main processor is not as fast as the 8" chumby devices.

In all cases, even if the processor can handle it, you still need the codecs, many of which are proprietary.  Chumby did not license the MP4 codecs for any of its devices, but the dash does carry such a license and can play them, since it has the same video player that Sony uses on their other devices.
