Topic: Support for mp3 players with RockBox open source firmware

These include many iPods, Sandisk Sansa, iRiver, Toshiba Gigabeat, Cowon, Archos, and more in development. I believe all are UMS devices.

Re: Support for mp3 players with RockBox open source firmware

Yeah, the rub is that they all tend to use different database format and file system layouts, and we don't actually *have* most of these players in order to develop and test against.

I ran into this problem at a previous employer, where I was asked to create a universal client application to manage MP3 players.

We have on our (rather large) list of things to do to support more players - it's pretty obvious why we starteded with the one we did, but the goal is to support more.

Rockbox uses it's own database, though I'm not sure if the details of the database vary from one supported device to another (it appears that it's all the same looking at their wiki). Here are some details: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/DataBase

The RockBox.org site also has links to device emulators to test against (here's one: http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/652 … emulator), which may be useful even if you don't want to have RockBox support.

And if Woot ever offers a Sansa for $29 again, I'll buy you one if you promise to support it :-)
