I notice that at least part of NOAA radar is not https, does the local radar widget use ones that are secure?

EDIT well the more I look the "wronger" I think I was - apparently almost all are now https.

re: local radar

Any update on this?

Re: Broken widgets work fine on chumby.com

I've been ridiculously swamped at work and haven't had a chance to look at it.  I hope to get to it this week.

Re: Broken widgets work fine on chumby.com

Author claims to have fixed this but it still doesn't work on my Dash BUT he may not be able to fix that since Sony doesn't have a developer option anymore.

Update: Maybe I should have said: This widget may be fixed but it still doesn't work on Dash units *maybe* because Sony has closed the developer option.

Re: Broken widgets work fine on chumby.com

Local Weather Radar now works on my Chumby 8.

Now if someone could fix ImageURL to support https

Re: Broken widgets work fine on chumby.com

It won't work on the Sony dash because that version of the widget is coming from their servers.  As mentioned before, Sony has disabled the ability to update widgets.

in case you haven't noticed, this isn't the Dash support forum.

maybe someday, if Sony relents, but not now.

Re: Broken widgets work fine on chumby.com

I don't object at all to discussion of the dash here, with the caveat that there's nothing we can do except comfort each other.  It probably would be best left for the "Off-topic" section though.

"in case you haven't noticed, this isn't the Dash support forum."

I have noticed. Didn't know that you were so sensitive to the word DASH. I know that there are people who own Chumby and Sony products. IF you would read my whole post you would know that I understood that Sony doesn't have a developer option anymore. I just added my insight in case someone reading it may also have a Dash that the NOAA widget was not working. Friendly is always best, don't you think?

as Duane says, best to leave Dash conversation in the offtopic section.

as to my comment to you, you posted this:

"Author claims to have fixed this but it still doesn't work on my Dash"

which, makes it off topic for a discussion about getting it working on the chumby.

I know you love your Dash(s), and keep posting here about the troubles you're having... which we can't do anything about.

Don't give us false hope :-(

and I will get back on topic but do have to say its a crying shame the way sony has treated the dash.
what they should do is arrange a free year with the chumby and hand them off to you..

I am so good at running other people's business, but somehow never appreciated. ;-)

I get an error on my Chumby and on the website preview ( http://www.chumby.com/guide/E3791136-9A … 8AA/widget ); eg if I enter a zip code then I get "Server error, please try again".

EDIT:  It looks like it's trying to contact http://content.chumby.com/locations/search?id=ZIPCODE and getting an error response :-(
"Mysql2::Error: Got error 28 from storage engine: SHOW FULL FIELDS FROM `locations`"

Thanks,

Yes, something's going on, looking into it now...

Re: Broken widgets work fine on chumby.com

If the chumby noaa weather radar widget is using the chumby server(s) as a http to https proxy, this wont turn out well.

Is this the https solution going foward?

What's the syntax so I can proxy https images through the ImageURL widget?

Re: Broken widgets work fine on chumby.com

I worked with the author to make sure the Local Weather Radar widget was well-behaved with regard to the proxy, including things like not having an aggressive cachebuster.  In the case of that widget and the regular NOAA widget, the data doesn't change frequently enough to require a fresh fetch from NOAA's Very Slow Servers (VSS) every time.  It also takes advantage of the fact that all of the data is coming from the same set of known servers.

I'm not sure how we can set up ImageURL to work well with the present proxy, since the URLs are arbitrary and entered by users.  Someone could easily take the proxy server down with a mis-entered URL as it's currently designed.

Re: Broken widgets work fine on chumby.com

We've fixed the content server - please let me know if it's working for you.  It might take a little while to return stable results.

Can a new URL widget be created?  It is one of the most useful widgets on chumby.

Re: Broken widgets work fine on chumby.com

Another useful widget that works on chumby.com but not on chumby is the Generic chumby RSS widget.  Depending on the feed, it may or may not load the image.

Re: Broken widgets work fine on chumby.com

NOAA weather is really behind here - says 44 degrees when its 77.
However the forecast boxes remain helpful if it can't otherwise be faster.

Re: Broken widgets work fine on chumby.com

Should we assume that while this was "fixed" by using the chumby servers to "strip" https, you still plan to try and update the oS/image to be able to use https in the future since the world seems to be going that way?

Re: Broken widgets work fine on chumby.com

Well, the issue seems to be beyond just expired certs - it looks like it's also related to deprecated methods of doing SSL, which would require newer versions of SSL libraries, which in turn require newer versions of other libraries, etc etc. This new replacement libraries may then break other parts of the firmware, which would then require updating, and their dependencies would require updates, and so on.  This issue could theoretically cascade to a "can't be done" level if it ultimately requires a kernel update, since the specific drivers provided by the SoC manufacturers are tied to very specific kernel versions.

Any changes to basic libraries would require rebuilding the firmware build systems, which have been hibernated for years.  They pulled source files from SVN repos that no longer exist (we use git nowadays) so those would also have to be rebuilt from archives.

We'd have to do this for all four devices we're currently supporting.  If we ever find a way to support dash through a hack, then it would all be moot, since it is impossible for us to replace that firmware.

Re: Broken widgets work fine on chumby.com

I understood all of that except the part between the beginning and the end -
So as more sites go https, can we expect the apps like URLimage to fail?

Now to display my ignorance at even a greater level, is there any way that locally we could set up a server to strip https from selected sources? (just saying that makes it sound impossible or incredibility complicated).
