Topic: Dash-opacolypse happening?

I know this isn't Dash support, but it looks like lots of people haven't been able to reboot their Dash units in the last week:

I've not tried rebooting mine yet; I doubt it would help anything.  No posts back on the Sony site yet either. sad

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

Let me see if I can determine what's going on.

EDIT:  Looks like the system is generally up, however, the Control Panel is delivered to dash devices by a completely different mechanism than on regular chumby devices - it's delivered by their "BIVL" system.

Unfortunately for me, I'm starting to get emails to support asking for help with this.

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

Ok, got some more info - yes, it appears to have been a BIVL issue, which they've allegedly fixed - HOWEVER, it requires a device reset which means contacting Sony support.

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

Finally found some help for the Dash. Sony is mute in the community forum.
I reset the Dash a couple of days ago but may need to do it again.
I know how to get to the special options menu and reset to factory settings....
Is that what needs to be done?

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

My understanding is that you actually have to contact Sony's support for them to reset something on their end.

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

Called sony and they said b7s and b70s are working but they are still working on c10s. They said I don't need to do anything until server is back up. Unfortunately I jumped the gun and unregistered and factory reset. Supposedly that is not a problem. I will just have to reregister when things are fixed.

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

1 of 3 dashes not working here - unfortunately the one on my desk that I spend all day at!  Power cycle does not help...gonna give it a while to see if any developments on their end before more drastic measures... smile

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

Will someone post here when their Dash starts working?  Mine is dead too.  Thanks!

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

Assuming that a HID-C10 could be rooted, is there a way to direct it to the "official" Chumby control panel, or better yet, use a offline variant?

The Sony Dash can actually be rooted (see directions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/SonyDash/comme … c10_heres_ / ). I don't think there's any offline solution for the Dash, however, and I also don't know if Duane can start hosting a server for rooted Dashes.

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

As I understand it Sony has the keys to the Dash and until they pass it someone else, Dashes have to work with Sony.
When I called Sony CS, he assured me that the server would be fixed soon and would work better for 5-10 years. He admitted that this same thing happened about a year ago and it was fixed at least for a while.
I have wondered how far would Sony be willing to carry this device.
B7s and B70s are supposed to be working. CS said C10s are on a different server so it will take longer to get them up again.
Can anyone reveal what models are working and not working? IF CS is correct ALL Bs should be working. Cs should be up relatively soon.

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

1/3 C10s still down - not sure why 2 are completely unaffected...?

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

Those other two devices come back up properly after a reboot?

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

My orange B70 has not been affected, even after a reboot.  My C10 is down even after resetting to defaults.

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

Does that mean B70 is working or not working?

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

I would think the B7 and B70 devices would still be working since they don't support BIVL and thus don't rely on the BIVL authentication systems to work.

On the C10, the information about the Control Panel is sent along with the other BIVL stuff about Netflix, Pandora, Slacker, etc.

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

Does the B units have video capabilities? I was enjoying my Dash c10. The videos play very good on it.

B70 is working.

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

Very good. Duane seems to have answered that above. I think the C10s were somewhat different under the hood.

The B and C devices are quite different - the C10 is based on a MIPS part that was designed for TV sets, and thus has a really nice video coprocessor in it and support for DRM-protected audio and video, hence the availability of Netflix, etc.  The B devices are based on a mid-range ARM, not much different than chumby devices of that era.  The BIVL video services are not available on that device.

We were partially involved in the development of the C10, although the BIVL and device authentication stuff was handled by Sony.  We had no involvement with the B devices beyond licensing of some source code to the company that Sony contracted with for the development (I think they specialized in computer-based "smart" toys).  I don't think I touched an actual B device until it was available to end users, and I don't own one now.

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

Still no connection for my C10. Hope Sony does something.

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

Discovered this update via https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Dash which I just happened to have open when I restarted my browser just now... cool

What's strange is that I never turned off my dash.  At least, until I got that error and did so in hopes that doing so might fix it.  It does restart itself somewhat regularly though, for reasons that I'm uncertain of - and apparently the other two around the house do not, since they remain unaffected... roll

To clarify, 2/3 never experienced the error, just the one on my desk - and it's still down - and it sounds from https://us.en.kb.sony.com/app/answers/d … 3/c/65,66/ like rebooting may cause the issue! smile

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

Bit of a mess going on at Slashdot:

https://hardware.slashdot.org/story/16/ … a-on-a-fix

There is a fix in the internal approval stage.

Odd that they linked to the Chumby Store rather than the main site.

Re: Dash-opacolypse happening?

Nice - thanks for sharing, Duane!  I'd forgotten about Slashdot!  I will never forget about Chumby... big_smile
