Topic: New widgets, mostly politics

As we enter the political "silly season" leading up to the 2016 elections, I've added several RSS apps for some of the more popular political sites and blogs. There should be something for everyone - left, right, or center. Hopefully you'll find something that reinforces your ideas, or better yet, makes you consider others.

* Wonkette
* Politico
* Talking Points Memo
* The Atlantic
* Breitbart
* Raw Story
* Newsmax
* Free Republic
* The Daily Beast
* The Week
* Mother Jones
* The Nation
* Crooks and Liars
* Daily Kos
* Townhall - Tipsheet
* The Daily Caller
* Alternet.org
* ThinkProgress
* Real Clear Politics
* The Blaze
* Slate

I've created a "Politics" channel on my devices, and it's very interesting to watch how current stories are interpreted by the various sites.

I'll probably add some more as I uncover the necessary data feeds - if you have suggestions, please let me know.
I've also added a slideshow app for the White House "Picture of the Day", so you can keep tabs on what the President is doing, whether it be destroying the country from within, leading us into a bright future of peace and harmony...or, you know, doing his job.

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

Question: Back in the olden days, there was a display panel with new widgets on the right side of the Apps screen (at least I think there was -- my memory is not 100% reliable). I used to follow that so I could try out new widgets as they were built. Any chance that something like that could be put back so it would be easier to find out about new widgets, like the ones you just created?

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

there are some rss feeds that announce updated widgets... this is the one I follow:

http://www.chumby.com/rss/updatedwidgets

Cleaning up any loose bits and bytes.

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

I'm look into restoring the list of new/updated widgets to the site.

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

There's also a widget that shows the RSS feed for the newest widgets:

Some third party variants:

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

Here are the modified RSS feeds (through Yahoo! Pipes) that link to the Chumby web page instead of just to the SWF files:

Updated widgets:
http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_ … render=rss

New widgets:
http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_ … render=rss

UPDATE: these are dead after Yahoo shut down with Pipes service.

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

The RSS feeds are definitely helpful. Thanks for pointing those out.

But being a basically lazy person, I prefer to see the list of new widgets right on the Chumby website, so I don't have to find other places to click.

Plus I really don't want to use a widget for this purpose on my channels. My most frequently used channels only have a few widgets (generally around half a dozen or less) and devoting valuable screen time to a display of "other" widgets just does not appeal to me.

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

I'm browsing/searching for the "Daily Kos" and "Slate" apps but can't find them.

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

Hmmm, yeah, they were marked private for some reason - they should be visible now. Sorry about that.

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

Thanks for the quick fix!

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

I'm enjoying the politics apps. But when I tap the little envelope icon it just shows a red question mark. On the Wired news apps it shows a blue check mark and sends the article URL to my email. If it's not too much bother, I'd like to use the email from the political apps too.

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

That should be working - I'll take a look.

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

Just a friendly reminder to check this is still on your to-do list.

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

Yes, I'm still looking at this one - I have been able to reproduce the client behavior, but the server seems to think everything is OK.  I should have the time to chase it down this weekend.

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

Thanks for the update.

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

OK, this should be working now.  I apparently forgot to assign the correct permissions to these widgets to allow them to send emails.

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

I tested 30 widgets on my politics channel and found:
Slate and Breitbart always show the red question mark.
Crooks and Liars showed the red question mark once, then worked every time after.
MediaMatters works, but has "ThinkProgress Article" as the Subject line.
The others all send email successfully.

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

Ok, fixed Slate, Breitbart and Media Matters (last one might require a channel reload or reboot).

Let me know if Crooks and Liars malfunctions again - it might have been cached in the system some where.

Thanks for the testing!

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

Thanks. They are all working now. Glad to help.

BTW, the email from line is "duane@chumby.com". Maybe you want to change it to something less personal?

Re: New widgets, mostly politics

Yeah, at some point I'll change it to the "no-reply@chumby.com" address.
