Topic: Ad supported version, alternative to subscription?

To Duane:
First, I REALLY appreciate all the work, and the fact that you kept our Chumbys running.

I don't have cable or satellite TV, I have free, over the air HDTV, paid for by commercials.
I don't have satellite radio or an MP3 player, I listen to free over the air radio in my car, paid for by commercials.
I have the free Spotify version, and listen to the ads every few songs.

I would be thrilled to have access to free Chumby widgets, paid for by one or two 10-15 second full-screen ads inserted every 15-30 minutes.

Just a thought,
Andy

(edited to add) Even one ten second ad inserted in every loop of my widgets wouldn't be horrible.

Re: Ad supported version, alternative to subscription?

the ad revenue for that wouldn't pay for anything, unfortunately, it was looked at in the past.

Cleaning up any loose bits and bytes.

Re: Ad supported version, alternative to subscription?

Yeah we tried that back in the Chumby days:

1) Nobody makes ads in that format so they must be custom built
2) The user base isn't large enough to interest advertisers
3) No way to do call to action
4) Users complained *loudly*
5) We made like $1.50 in total revenue from ads we tried for about a month.

Thank you!
