Topic: Connecting via USB to GPRS/3G modem

Hi,

I've gone through the forum listings and haven't found this topic listed. Has anyone here gotten a Chumby to work using a mobile broadband connection?

Suggestions on hardware and/or links to software resources or notes would be very much appreciate. I will be meeting with an engineer in a few days to discuss building this and will share what we come up with. I'd love to talk to anyone who's working/worked on this so we can get going quickly.

The dongle I had in mind might be something like this:

We will be dis-assembling a Chumby and repackaging it so if there's a simpler solution using internal connections we can do that.

Cool idea.  I'm not sure about others, but with Android and Windows Mobile phones, you can set to create an ad-hoc network so you could use just use your chumbys wifi to connect over 3G, but it would be neat to have it connect directly.

Not sure if this will help you, but you can connect your chumby to your laptop's shared wi-fi, while the laptop is connecting over the cellular data network using, say, an EVDO card.  Some details here:  http://wiki.chumby.com/mediawiki/index. … osh_laptop

The EDGE/GPRS driver support should be in the kernel somewhere considering there's several Linux phones already on the shelf that support 3G data connections, at most should be a matter of adding the required modules to the kernel...
