Topic: Recipes

As of the time of posting this, there are several apps that will show a single recipe:

In general all of these apps can show 1 recipe, offer no flexibility, and no ability to post and reference your own recipes.  There are lots of possible systems for describing a recipe, lots of way to store them, make them searchable, etc... but most of all I wanted to start a discussion on what we, as a community are really hungry for (bad pun, I know)

It may also be of interest that the way US copyright law is written, recipes are not entirely copyrightable.  their arrangement (as in a cookbooks order) or their artistic description (the exact wording of instructions, any diagrams) are protected, but not the ratios, or the actual procedure.  This opens the door to copying and citing recipes, or even easier to defend legally would be to cite your "inspiration" and then paraphrase the instructions.

I will add my own recommendations for format below in a separate post once I have thought about it for a few days.  Let the ideas fly!

Re: Recipes

Well, any news?  I was hoping to find some database somewhere (Access, mySQL, whatever) and then use the Chumby (Infocast in my case) to query that database.  But I'm not really a programmer so don't have the requisite skill.

Re: Recipes

Unfortunately the chumby device that I purchased didn't meet my needs, so it got returned.  It is definitely something that I continue to think a great deal about.  My current thought would be to come up with an XML format, that I could post with a wiki.  Then index it with a crawler and search the database with some sort of interface.

The problem that I have so far is how to divide recipes, by mixing method, cooking method, etc.  I want to create a "dictionary' of ingredients, as well as a way to list reasonable margin of error of each in the recipe.  If I do decide to implement something, it will probably be in java, an thus android.

Re: Recipes

thanks for the list of kitchen apps!  I'm in the process of organizing what I'd like in the perfect kitchen appliance.  Feel free to read and/or add your ideas:

Oddly, the above-listed Everyday Food widget might be Dash-only:

I am very much interested in this! I really need an app for my Chumby One that will let me search for recipes. There must be a way to do this!
