Topic: Stream The World radio stations

Hi all --

Not sure if this would be the right forum.....but you can redirect me if not.

How about this. One of my favorite radio stations has changed its streaming format from .wma (I used to listen on a Reciva based radio) to a 'Stream The World' browser based flash player. Very difficult to try and extract any information from the source of these pages.

However by using a packet sniffer and URL Snooper I have found that this URL

http://208.80.52.150/CJYQAMAAC
*my interpretation of the filename is CJYQ (call sign) AM (its an AM station) and AAC (format)*

is probably the new stream coming in. At any rate, when I plug it into Firefox it just sits there constantly downloading it. I tried directing the stream to Winamp and something else I have called FLVplayer, but neither would play it. Firefox identifies it as: application/flv mime type. Below I have pasted the URLs that were sniffed during the couple of seconds from the time I clicked the 'Listen Live' link on the www.radionewfoundland.ca page to the time the music started up.

And of course, I tried plugging a couple of these URLs into my Chumby and it just stayed idle. Is there any hope for me to hear this on the Chumby?

And of course thanks in advance for your thoughts. I find the level of thoughtful and considered input on these forums quite encouraging and much appreciated.

Re: Stream The World radio stations

Ok, well first off I found your post through google because my fav station switched to StreamTheWorld since I had last used "Listen Live". I happen to hate having to use flash to listen to streaming music so with help from your post I found a way to download the "playlist"(a streaming playlist that is).

I found a StreamTheWorld playlist from this site(while googleing how to get around the flash stream):

http://boardreader.com/domain/streamtheworld.com

one of the links at the bottom ended with "WGNAM.pls" I used your logic and put in my stations info(CILVFM.pls)

so just go here and you can get your Radio Newfoundland stream!:
http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/CJYQAM.pls

I use VLC media Player to listen, I assume Winamp will play it and WMP might too.

now since I found this site through Google I have no Idea what Chumby is and have no idea how to use this playlist with it, or even if it's possible, or if thats what you even want x.x

I know your post was few months ago, but if you haven't figured it out yet I hope this helps

Oh how nice of you to post this information. Yes, that is one of my favorite stations. However, I detest sitting by the PC to listen to it. I own a Chumby.....

http://www.chumby.com

and a Sangean WFR-20 which is a Reciva technology based internet radio appliance.

http://www.reciva.com
http://www.sangean.com/product.php?mode … prod_id=42

And so far, the url works with the Chumby and the Sangean radio.

Thanks again for posting this information. Stream the World has been a real thorn in the side of those of us who like to listen to internet radio on stand alone devices.

One of the reasons I got a Chumby, was to be able to listen to Stream the World stations, since the Chumby incorporates a flash player. I must say I have been surprised at the lack of interest on this board for this capability. You are the first person to even respond to my posts. I have reposted this request in the Flash Development section without any comments either.

Anyway, thank you, welcome to the Chumby forum. You might also find the Reciva community of interest.

Re: Stream The World radio stations

i tried to create a simple widget to play the flv but i couldn't get it to play on the chumby. For some reason the  virtual chumby works but the chumby doesn't.  Put this in an html page to see the virtual chumby as my test widget is private.

<embed width="492" height="405" quality="high" bgcolor="#FFFFFF" wmode="transparent" name="virtualchumby" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.chumby.com/virtualchumby2.swf" FlashVars="_chumby_profile_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.chumby.com%2Fxml%2Fvirtualprofiles%2F81B8FF7C-B4BB-11DC-B120-001635C47868&baseURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.chumby.com" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>

I also tried to download the flv and interestly Firefox shows it as a 2 GB file.

Here is the actionscript if anyone else wants to play with it. Mostly just from the Flash Helps docs for NetStream.

this.stop();

var connection_nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection();
connection_nc.connect(null);
var stream_ns:NetStream = new NetStream(connection_nc);
stream_ns.bufferTime=0;
//video object on stage named "my_video"
my_video.attachVideo(stream_ns);

//Movieclip on stage for screen touch play/pause toggle
mcPauseToggle.onRelease = function()
{
    stream_ns.pause();
}
stream_ns.play("http://208.80.52.150/CJYQAMAAC");

Re: Stream The World radio stations

That widget won't work because widgets can't play shoutcasts.

I agree, very annoying. The worst part is the only reason its like that is for "security".

Re: Stream The World radio stations

This actionscript will run your movie:

class Main
{
    private var parent:MovieClip;

    function Main(mc:MovieClip)
    {
        // save reference to main movieclip
        this.parent = mc;

        _root.loadMovie("http://player.streamtheworld.com/jbroadcast/jbroadcast14.swf?CALLSIGN=CJYQAMAAC");
    }

    static function main(mc:MovieClip)
    {
        var app = new Main(mc);
    }
}

StreamTheWorld streams as FLV, so it was impossible to use the My Stream's player. This method is simple, and works. The player will display on your unit, controls and all.

If you need help building the SWF, I'll post one for you. Eventually I'm going to write a StreamTheWorld widget that gives the option of setting the CALLSIGN.

Re: Stream The World radio stations

Ok I know this is an old topic, just wondering if there was any progress made to create a Stream the World widget? My favorite radio station has just moved to them and I would love to listen to them on the Chumby. They used to stream in .wma so it was nearly impossible.

Thanks

nofix -

If you have not made a configurable widget yet, would you mind helping me out getting this to play on my chumby. I need a little more help with using the action script you show above. The station I want is

http://player.streamtheworld.com/livepl … IGN=WIILFM

Thanks in advance for anything you can do.

Re: Stream The World radio stations

Ok, call me impatient, but I had a little down time so I gave this a try. Now please keep in mind that I have absolutely no experience in doing any of this. So I attempted to create the SWF file myself and by some act of god it actually worked somewhat. I could still use a little help ironing out the bugs. Here is what I did...

So I tried following the Wiki and using FlashDevelop as suggested, the issue is that it still requires you to have the Adobe Flash IDE to actually compile the SWF. So I got a little frustrated as the Wiki stated you only needed the FlashDevelop. So I did a little searching and came across MTASC. This is purely commend line based, so I was very apprehensive that I could figure this out. Luckily they have some pretty good examples on the webpage and I was actually able to create the SWF. I uploaded it to chumby.com and tried it out and it actually worked.

The problem I have is that every 30-60 seconds or so the audio skips. I have the widget set to run "Forever" in the configuration so it should not be reloading. Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a way to have the Chumby buffer the audio to help prevent this?

Thanks again for any help you can provide.

Oh and if anyone want this widget just let me know. It is set to play 95.1 WIIL Rock out of the Chicago/Milwaukee area. I could also try to compile other SWF's with other call signs if I can ever get this to buffer the audio a little. One other thing is that the video stops updating as well but I really did not care too much about that.

Re: Stream The World radio stations

I'm interested in your source and any scripts you used to compile using mtasc.  I found a station I want to listen to on stream the world.  Thanks!

Re: Stream The World radio stations

FlashDevelop will use the MTASC compiler -- it even ships with it.  When you create a new project, don't pick a Flash IDE project type, but instead AS2 Project.

Re: Stream The World radio stations

Thanks for the info on the Stream The World player! I used the URL forms from this thread to add my long-time favourite (95.5 - KLOS) to the Verizon FiOS Media Manager, so now I can listen to KLOS while I'm permanently stuck in NJ.

The URL that I gave Media Manager was:
hxxp://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/KLOSFM.pls

Media Manager, however, reports now reports KLOS as these URLs:
hxxp://2243.live.streamtheworld.com:80/KLOSFMCMP3
hxxp://2243.live.streamtheworld.com:3690/KLOSFMCMP3
hxxp://2243.live.streamtheworld.com:443/KLOSFMCMP3

...and lists KLOS.1, KLOS.2, and KLOS.3 as valid stations all having the above URL. I'm assuming that the split is for HD radio. All three are playign the same stream.

I hope this helps someone here to find their station.

Thanks a lot Chumby users!

Looks like this topic is a little stale, but I'd sure like to emulate your efforts and add a station or two of my own in a custom .SWF.

Did you resolve the buffer issue?  Still willing to compile with alternate streams?  Or share your source?
