Topic: Google Gadge makes Displaying Virutual Chumby on Google Home Page Easy

Just add the HTML/Javascript Google Gadget,

http://www.google.com/ig/directory?hl=e … htmljs.xml

to your Google page and paste in your Virtual Chumby Code; voila, Virtual Chumby a la Google smile

Keep cool, but care!

Very cool, thanks!  I had to click the HTML tab & paste before it actually worked (doh!) but it looks great now.

Re: Google Gadge makes Displaying Virutual Chumby on Google Home Page Easy

Don't forget you can edit the settings in order to change the title of the Gadget.

Re: Google Gadge makes Displaying Virutual Chumby on Google Home Page Easy

How do you get this working?   I added the widget, then I copied and pasted the virtual chumby link that was generated and all I see is the code in the window.

Re: Google Gadge makes Displaying Virutual Chumby on Google Home Page Easy

Hey, creep!  You did hit the "save" button, did'n'cha?

Re: Google Gadge makes Displaying Virutual Chumby on Google Home Page Easy

Yep.  I hit the save button.

All I see in the window is <embed> bunch of code </embed>.

Re: Google Gadge makes Displaying Virutual Chumby on Google Home Page Easy

Then you never generated the virtual chumby to begin with, so you didn't have anything to copy!  (Just a guess :-)

Re: Google Gadge makes Displaying Virutual Chumby on Google Home Page Easy

I don't understand.  I copied the code so I do have it.

Here's what I did:
1)  I added the google widget
2)  I went to the chumby site, logged in, clicked on the "My chumby" tab,
3)  Selected "create virtual chumby" and copied the code from the "copy and paste this code" text area
4) Pasted this code in to the google widget code area
5)  clicked on "save" from the google widge code area
6) refreshed the page and only see the code I pasted into the google widget area.  It does not display a virtual chumby, I only the see the virtual chumby code I pasted in.

Re: Google Gadge makes Displaying Virutual Chumby on Google Home Page Easy

I got the exact same error as creep...........

Re: Google Gadge makes Displaying Virutual Chumby on Google Home Page Easy

On the gadget in the upper right corner, if it says Edit HTML, click it to turn it to Edit Text.  Being in the Edit Text mode it is not recognizing the html.

Now if anyone can figure out why my virtual chumbies seem to like to grow past the size of the gadget box, regardless of what I set the virtual settings size to... :-/

Check out the layout of your Google homepage.  I changed mine in order to have a larger column.

My virtual chumby was going past the gadget box as well.  I edited the width in the code and now it fits in the box.

Kimble, thanks for the song, now we just need Chumby Karaoke!  (I was named after that song by my very odd parents)

Okay, can you tell me how to change the layout of my google homepage?  I searched and searched but couldn't see the place where to do that.  But I miss a lot from time to time.

You're welcome, Cecilia.  Cute song, that.  smile
You need to sign in to Google, and then use iGoogle.  You can then use the drop-down arrow on your Home page tab to "Edit this tab."

Re: Google Gadge makes Displaying Virutual Chumby on Google Home Page Easy

Side question: for the virtual chumby, is there any way to include a "switch channels" combo box/drop down?  Maybe this is the wrong place for this question, or maybe I missed a feature of the virtual chumby?

Yah, wrong place, but I'm not sure where to go.  The channel specified within the VC code, but programming a drop-dow in html shouldn't be very difficult, but I believe that you'd need to hard-code the channel names, i.e. I don't think that you could get the drop-down in your VC to automatically populate with your Chumby channels.

My two cents, for what they're worth.  Yeh, I know: two cents! roll

Re: Google Gadge makes Displaying Virutual Chumby on Google Home Page Easy

The VC is not given enough information about the user account to change channels for security reasons.

Thanks, Duane.  That's what I thought.  You da man.

tchesney, thanks for the post.  I see that you've already done a nice job of describing how to put a VC on a WinXP Active desktop, as illustrated in:

Yep, that's the paperback cover of Thomas Pynchon's "Against the Day" on my chumby (named it Gumby) on my WinXP desktop.  FWIW, Gumby wakes me (weekdays, sweet!) playing KCUF (URL below) (yes, shameless self-promo, but my station ledger is in light-red ink, so this is not exactly a commercial promo) smile.

Re: Google Gadge makes Displaying Virutual Chumby on Google Home Page Easy

Apparently somebody else *has* done this, given the post immediately above yours - however, I suggest someone add this to the Chumby tricks on the wiki.

If we get enough of this sort of thing, I'll add a "Virtual Chumby tricks" page smile
