I had a 2.5 inch HD lying around from my old laptop (60 GB). I put it in a 2.5 shell and connected to the USB port and it worked beautifully. I had to put 5V external supply to the HD shell and USB power was not enough. May be newer portable drive may work. I tried with 8" as well as 3" and HD worked in both. I am happy.
