Topic: Digital audio output

Hi,

I don't own a chumby yet, but was wondering how difficult/possible it would be to hack in either an optical or coaxial digital audio output.  I want to use the chumby as a digital music player with my living room stereo setup, but don't want to deal with ground loops and such.

Thanks.

Re: Digital audio output

The easiest thing to do with the chumby one would be to use a USB audio card that had the sort of connector you want.  It's not officially supported, but it just so happens that if you have a USB audio device attached when it starts up, that will become the primary audio output.

Re: Digital audio output

Thanks for the response.  I remember reading about problems with external audio cards.  Here's the post: http://forum.chumby.com/viewtopic.php?id=1544

Has this been resolved?

Re: Digital audio output

I'm mostly familiar with the chumby one, but I know we've tried four or five USB sound cards here in the office just to see if they work, and haven't had any strange problems.

The biggest problem we've noticed is that the mixer has a different name, so volume control doesn't work.  We're trying to figure out what to do about that.

Re: Digital audio output

Cool, thanks.  I have one of these laying around:

Any reason it wouldn't work with the chumby one?

Re: Digital audio output

Their mention of "special drivers" might be a bit suspect, but as long as it shows up as a standard USB audio device it should work.

Re: Digital audio output

Looks like it's supported in alsa as of version 1.0.16.  Anyone know what version is on the chumby one?

Re: Digital audio output

root@blackened ~ $ cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.11rc2 (Wed Jan 04 08:57:20 2006 UTC).

Unfortunately, you're out of luck with the version number in the current firmware, unless chumby1 runs an updated kernel.  I'll know soon as mine *should* ship today.  (I still wonder if I can pick it up?!? big_smile)

Re: Digital audio output

The latest chumby one software release 1.0.3 (build 1.0.2430) is running a 2.6.28 kernel with ALSA Driver Version 1.0.18rc3.

Logitech V-20 USB speakers :

work with the Chumby One and sound great.

Alas, the volume controls do not work.

FYI
My Yamaha APU-70 amplifier works fine when connected via USB to the Insignia Infocast 8po.
Flac files played correctly from USB memory stick.

Insignia Infocast connected via USB work fine with M-Audio FASTTrack Pro and Logitech USB headphone-microphone.
