The author of the article seems to be confused about using color LCDs to sub-pixel render text. The screen has approximately the same resolution as a RGB stripe VGA LCD screen and text will look the same on both screens when the software is finished. It may even look better on the OLPC screen since the OLPC scren can subpixel render in 2D instead of just one on an RGB stripe display.

Re: Use the OLPC screen

I seriously doubt those displays will be sold on the open market to anyone except those with the project, but if they are, why not? They'd just have to find a correct sized touchscreen and rework the whole board to support the strange format LCD they're using and the new touchscreen (which would likely not be able to take advantage of the Freescale MX21's integrated touchscreen driver)...

On second thought, let's keep with the cheap LCD+Touchscreen we've got.

Re: Use the OLPC screen

its whether the video hardware would support it. cos at the time of 233mhz pcs, i dont think anybody ran at resolutions higher than 800x600

its an interesting concept. only problem is finding a matching 1200x900 touch screen. its usually easier to buy the screens with the touch film on it already.

need upload space for the forums or a chumby blog? right here then

Re: Use the OLPC screen

There have been prototype OLPCs with touchscreens. They decided that they were too unreliable and went with a touchpad instead.

I can put you in touch with the OLPC people if you want to find about about hardware availability. It will be several months before the screen goes into production. There is no intention to keep the hardware proprietary, everything should be for sale as soon as it is in production.
